We had a few issues today with technology, so it took awhile to get the Google Expedition going. Then this afternoon we could not connect with the Alaska Zoo. We will try to reschedule the virtual field trip for next week. We enjoyed visiting the dissections class and learning about shark parts! We also had a picnic lunch outside and played on the playground to release some of our energy. Students started to work on their projects today. That will be our main focus for the next (3) days. It will be exciting for families to see the final products at open house on Tuesday evening. Have a great night!

We had a very fun day today! This morning we talked about the Scientific Method and then did an experiment with "Blubber Hands!" We also talked about the difference between a mammal and a marine mammal. Then after our snack break we had our first virtual field trip from the Alaska SeaLife Center in Seward, Alaska. Ask your child about the field trip and what he/she made to take home. Remember, tomorrow we have our extended day and all students will need a lunch and beverage, plus their morning snack. We will try Google Expeditions in the morning, watch the Dissections class dissect a shark, and then have another virtual field trip in the afternoon with the Alaska Zoo teaching us about Polar Bears! It will be a very busy and exciting day! Have a great evening!

Today we finished up our discussion about the Northern Lights, completed our "Flag" of Alaska, and looked at books about Alaska or Alaskan animals. Then we learned about the Iditarod Dogsled Race and did an activity related to our read aloud book, The Year of Miss Agnes. The students also made a plan for their project presentation. If your child is making a diorama, please send an empty shoe box that he/she can use. I will have all of the other supplies that they need. Reminder: Thursday is our extended day and all students will need a lunch and a beverage. We will have a picnic if the weather cooperates! Have a great afternoon!

On Monday we continued to research our Alaskan topic. Students started to think about "How" they will present their information. The class finished up their creation of an "Alaskan Flag," and we started to talk about the Northern Lights. At the end of our Monday session we continued our read aloud, The Year of Miss Agnes.
On Wednesday we will have our first Virtual Expedition at 11:00. Thursday is our extended day and we will try the Google Expedition glasses and have our second Virtual Expedition at 1:00. Remember: Students will need a cold lunch and beverage for our extended day on Thursday! Thank you!

Today we continued our research in the computer lab. We also saw a really interesting video on Alaska and each student created/designed their own Alaskan Flag. This morning we also talked briefly about "Ecology" and "Global Warming." We ended out day with our read aloud book. Students need to think about their project over the weekend and decide "HOW" they want to present their information. Please remember to send back the movie permission slip too! I am really enjoying my time with your children ~ it is always so much fun to do things that we don't get a chance to do in the regular classroom. Have a great weekend!

This morning when the students arrived they picked their topic for research. Then we went to the computer lab and started to research our topic. I think we worked for about an hour! After our snack break we continued our discussion on the History of Alaska and how Alaska got its flag. We take a few breaks during the day to play community building games like Silent Ball, Hide the Thimble, and the "Clip Game!" You will have to ask your child about that one! We end our session every day with a read aloud called, The Year of Miss Agnes.
It is one of my favorite read aloud books. Ask your child what the setting is of the story.
Reminder: Have your child return the movie permission slip. Don't forget, next Thursday, june 20th, we have our extended day. Students will need a cold lunch and beverage for that day. We will have a picnic lunch if the weather cooperates. Thanks so much and have a great evening!

Today we watched an educational video on the animals of the arctic. Students brainstormed lists of animals and other things that could be a topic for a research report. We learned about the Alaskan Flag and researched the internet for answers to questions about Alaska. Tomorrow students will pick their topic for research and we will start collecting information. All students were given a reminder/permission sheet. Please return the bottom of it if your child has permission to watch the movie on the last day. I would like each student to bring in an empty water bottle and an empty plastic bag. Plastic straws would work too! We are going to talk about Pollution and Ecology as it relates to the oceans around Alaska. Then we will create "Trash Art." Have a really great evening!

Today we met all of our classmates, talked about "How" and "Why" the United States purchased the Alaskan territory, played a few community building games, discussed "Classroom Expectations," and started a read aloud called, The Year of Miss Agnes.
Don't forget to send a PEANUT FREE SNACK or money for your child to purchase a snack every day during our snack time. Also, if you have plans for your child after Project SEEK different from usual, please send a note or call the Project SEEK office at 651-303-5029.
Students are expected to have exemplary behavior during this program. If any student has difficulty listening, following directions, or completing class assignments/projects, I will give you a call!
I am looking forward to a fun summer with your children!
Have a great evening!

Dear Students and Families,
WELCOME to Awesome Alaska!
I am looking forward to exploring this beautiful state with all of you. My name is Kimberly Schmidt and I teach second grade at Hinckley Elementary School. This is the fourth summer that I have offered a class and taught with Project SEEK.
We will be learning about Alaska through fiction and nonfiction books, videos, research projects, art activities, virtual field trips, and more. Students will decide on one topic to research and then share with the rest of the class. We will talk about plants and animals, ecosystems, mountain ranges, ocean life, Northern Lights, culture, ecology, and much more. I look forward to seeing the students’ completed projects.
On our Extended Day the plan is to experience two or three virtual field trips to learn more about life in Alaska. At some point during our session we will explore “Google Expeditions.” Students will need a cold lunch and beverage for our Extended Day Picnic Lunch!
If you have any questions you can contact me at [email protected] or call 651-792-6206.
Thank you so much and see you this summer!
