Welcome to Engineering Academy
Greetings!
My name is Joe Ranger and I am the instructor for Engineering Academy. I am writing this letter to inform you about all of the awesome things we will be doing this summer in our classroom. If you like to build and experiment things, you’ve come to the right place because we will be building and experimenting all the time! This course is designed to be a project based engineering type class, which means we will spend our time with hands on materials and no homework!
In all the science classrooms I teach, safety is the number one concern. We must make sure that we are being safe in the classroom and with the lab materials at all times. Respect for one another is also something that I find to be very important. Science is fun, getting hurt is not. Let's all work hard at being safe and having a lot of fun!
Some of the cool stuff we will be building/experimenting in class this summer is: popsicle stick cars, catapults, crash test cars, egg parachutes, roller coasters and more. See you all soon, be ready to work hard and play harder!

Tuesday, June 11th
Today was our welcome to SEEK day! We started our day by gathering by the front door from the bus. We then had our meet and greet inside the classroom where we made name tags and learned about each other. From there we talked about how scientists are different and alike from engineers. Afterwords we got our first Engineering challenge: To build a tin foil boat that will hold the most pennies! Check out the gallery below to see our progress.
Wednesday, June 12th
Today we started our day talking about car crashes and basic physics. We broke up into small groups to discuss the benefits and problems of different car types. Lastly, we made our own race cars!
Thursday, June 13th
After testing our race cars and modifying them in the morning, we started our next challenge: Crush Towers! The objective is to build a tower, using limited supplies, that can support our own body weight. Hopefully they we will be ready to test tomorrow!
Friday, June 14th
Today we we tested our towers. The challenge was for them to hold our own weight, which was a great challenge!

Monday/Tuesday June 17th & 18th
We started this week by discussing projectile motion. In order to help conceptualize projectile motion, we working in the computer lab working on simulations of cannon shots and discovered the best angle to launch a projectile is 45 degrees. Using this knowledge, we made catapults and constructed siege towers!
Wednesday/Thursday June 19th and 20th
Wednesday brought us the Judo bot project. Judo bots are popsicle stick robots that are powered by hydraulics. We use syringes with surgical tubing to transfer water back in forth to move the robot. We then use these judo bots to battle and try to flip each other over!
Thursday was our extended day, we spent our day constructing model rockets! Unfortunately we did not recover very many from launches, but we had a great time building them and launching them. Some went over 1250 feet into the sky!

Monday/Tuesday June 24th and 25th
Monday we dedicated our time to sling shot rockets, rubber band helicopters and some time working on energy simulations in the computer lab.
Tuesday is open house, all are welcome to come in and check out what we've been up to. Open house goes from 5-7pm please stop in and see our engineers hard work!
