Days 6-10 including our Extended Day
Sorry for the delay on posts. I'm sure you have received plenty of awesome stories from the kids. As they continue to level, they gain new skills, higher stats, and more dice to roll, making those calculations more and more complex. For instance, someone might choose to attack and be bombarded with all the things they have to remember: if they can roll twice (advantage), how much sneak attack dice do I add (four), do I multiply the result by two (critical hit), plus my modifier, is it hurt already so that I can add another damage die, what is my final result, and finally, can I attack again! And that is only for attacking. We practice mental math up for numbers between 15 and 50 each time we roll. They use addition for attacks and subtraction when they are hit. They also continue to work more on teamwork as the challenges they face become ever more dire. It is fun to see them buying gear for others to better work as a team, and building strategies based on their group.
For our extended day we spent some time with creative writing for our characters. They have some really great stories written down to share with you on open house (tomorrow, the 25th, after 5 pm). Dinner will be served in the cafeteria, so be sure to head down there for some great food. Students will also receive certificates of completion in the cafeteria.
Over the next couple days we will be finishing our adventures. I will mostly share pictures in my posts from this point on. Thank you for all of your support!

Day 5 (Monday)
One of the groups had to flex their brains a bit extra as they were sent on a diplomatic mission to secure allies among the lizard folk. The party discovers a thicker plot developing within the depths of the sea and pledge their loyalty to the alliance against it. But first, we need to win their trust. The other group also learned about how jumping in over their heads can have some dire consequences, and that only together can they be victorious. They've also learned to think outside the box when problem solving, and to use the environment to their advantage.
No students were swallowed by giant frogs on today's adventure...

Day 4
Both groups continue to work on their teamwork as they try to overcome the challenges we present to them. Near death experiences abound as mistakes have been rampant today. We had one team discovering the many troubles that go along with oozes, while the other was began a raid on a pirate ship and showcased their ability to swim.
While the adventures are fun and probably full of great stories at the end of the day, I would like to share that it's a pleasure to watch your kids grow in their number sense. Nearly every action they try to perform requires a dice roll, and adding up dice, modifiers, and remembering all the things that might effect the outcome is great brain exercise. The kids are becoming noticeably faster at base 10 calculations and getting better and better each day at learning mental math tricks to help with quick calculations. As we continue to level up and advance the game, so too will the amount of things they have to keep track of, or the more dice will be added to the things they need to calculate (a fireball spell is eight 6-sided dice!!). Sometimes the groups will need to use teamwork to accomplish a task, or really put their brains together to figure out a complex puzzle. I can't wait to see what they come up with next!

Day 3
Today the students reached their first level-up. We got to calculate new hit-point amounts and figure out any new skills that we had access to. They were able to return to town to sell all the valuable loot. Some of them were invited to the town council meeting to decide the next course of action and the rest delving deeper into the citadel as they keep their eyes open for a baby dragon that needs saving. Both teams had some near death experiences, so be sure to find out all of the exciting details.
Students have begun discovering interesting loot, and it's fun to see these items get added to their character art, or weaved into their stories.

Day 2
We took our adventurers out for a spin today. They explored their first town and followed a few leads. Some of them ventured to the nearby town to investigate a sunken temple, while the rest traveled to a nearby haunted house. Both teams encountered some close calls that I'm sure they would love to tell you about. We're getting a lot of practice adding numbers less than 20 and recalling all of the important facts of our characters and how to use them. Be sure to ask your student all about it.

Day 1
Today we learned how to get started including everything from group etiquette to rolling dice to making characters. Students will daily also refine their character art and back stories while we play. Each student has selected a miniature for their character, and an order has been placed will be placed tomorrow, as we had one student absent today. They will receive them as soon as I do.

Welcome Students and Families,
We will soon be embarking on an adventure. It doesn't matter if you've played before or if you are completely new, we're going to have a great time. All you have to do is bring a good attitude and your imaginations.
Our first day will explore what game play is like and create our characters. While you will need to bring nothing extra to our class, if you do happen to have any 5th edition D&D books, feel free to bring those. You'll want to start thinking about what kind of character you would like to play. We will create those characters, their stories, and maybe even some character art!
Let the adventures begin,
Mr. Hillerns
